what can i do when my car oil pressure drops and the light stays on only when it is hot? What can i do when my car oil pressure drops and the light stays on when hot?
first look at your engine oil is it up to the proper level? if its low like a quart or two than this will make the pressure drop. If your oil has not bean changed in a while and it looks black than is time to change if the oil. If it has a fast drip when you hold the dip stick than this means that the oil has thinned out and you should be changed as well as the filter. Look in your cars owners manual for the right weight oil many new cars to day run 5W20 or 5W30 oils so by putting in 10W40 or 20W50 you could cause damage to your cars engine. If your oil is clean and fresh and your car still has an oil pressure problem than you could be in for a new oil pump. What can i do when my car oil pressure drops and the light stays on when hot?
you probably need fresh oil and filters, or the oil pump is on its way out.,
You are at risk of engine seizure.
One item the others haven't mentioned is that somewhere in your system is an oil pressure relief valve. This could be stuck and cause the symptom of overheating and low oil pressure.
Trust me believe that you do have low pressure as when an engine seizes at speed it is a very hairy experience I know I've been there and ended up in someones front garden
Frankly take the car to a garage and get it checked quick or sell it in the depths of winter
Worth getting the oil changed, and maybe getting the engine checked out too, but it may not be the end of the world. A lot of old, high mileage cars will show an oil pressure light when hot at idle speed. If the light goes off when you rev it up, it's probably not too serious.
If the oil pressure light comes on and stays on the best thing to do is stop the motor at once and find out why.
It may be the oil level - check.
Or, the pressure sensor switch - you can't check this yourself.
Or, a defective oil-pump - more work for the garage - very ex-spensive.
yur engine is ready to seize up. check the oil pressure ; the pump pressure after you changed the oil to single viscosity 40 weight. when you see the red lite on ; it's called the ';the idiot lite'; yur engine is in dire trouble. if it's an old engine and the climate isnt severely cold ; use some STP or some Bardahl engine Syrup to thicken up the 40 weight more
You need to change the oil. It is old and thinning out. If you have recently changed the oil, you put the wrong weight oil in.
Say you put in 10w30. The oil's thickness is rated at 10 weight when the oil is cold, which is thin. When it gets hot it becomes 30 weight which is thick. So if it is losing pressure when hot, you will need to use oil with a higher numerical rating. That is the second number in the weight rating.
So instead of 10w30, go with 10w40, and so on..
Try a thicker weight of oil
The engine oil pressure light is there to show you that the engine oil pressure is below the required pressure. Often there can be a couple of simple reasons for this. First check the engine oil level, if low top up to the required level. If this is ok and you are unsure when the car was last serviced, change the oil filter. If the filter becomes blocked it switches over to an internal by pass, this by pass allows the car to run but at a lower oil pressure and without any filtration.
If both of these check are ok then unfortunately it sound like the main bearings have gone. The pressure from the oil is created by the main bearings, if they are worn the clearances increase and the pressure drops.
Ja.
Get the oil changed and engine flushed.
Fit new oil filter.
You may have a faulty oil pressure switch so fit a new one anyway.
check the level ... the light is only a warning that the pressure is low.... cold engines always have higher pressure which drops as it warms up... if you rev the engine it should go out but check the dipstick and top it up to the maximum mark anyway ...if it doesn't then switch it off and get some help before you do some damage.
you need the oil pressure checking when the engine is hot, to establish whether or not it is a pressure switch problem or an oil pressure problem.
most high mileage?...cars may do the same when idling!...but if its on when your driving?...it means your oil pressure is well below working pressure....for example the working pressure can be 40-60 psi when driving...but the light comes on when the pressure drops to under 10psi...check oil level...and if ok?...consider using one of the oils designed for high mileage cars...other than that you may have to consider having the engine/oil pump/pressure sender unit etc...checked out?...best of luck...
It is a bad sign, faulty oil pump but probably well worn engine.
But you could try fresh oil (higher viscosity) ask in the motor shop about oil additives.
Failing that take the wire off the oil sensor. It won't make it better but you can forget about it till the engine starts knocking.
