Is it illegal to drive your diesel car on vegetable oil and chip fat?

i have a friend who drives their 17 year old diesel peugeot using old chip fat and vegetable oil, but he was told this is illegal and he faces a fine if he is caught, and even imprisonment. Is this true?Is it illegal to drive your diesel car on vegetable oil and chip fat?
In July 2007 it was made legal to use vegetable oil as a motor fuel with no duty payable as long as you use no more than 2.500 litres in 12 months. (UK)Is it illegal to drive your diesel car on vegetable oil and chip fat?
Yes you can use vegetable oil to run your car as stated you can use 2500 litres per year with no need to register with C%26amp;E however keep your receipts as proof of useage. But don't forget that if you go over this limit you are liable to duty on the whole amount used and you would need to register. Most older diesels can run with a 50/50 mix of diesel and veggie with no ill effects however I would not advise its use in a more modern common rail diesel engine. Seals in the pump can be damaged by veggie oil this seems to be a particular problem with Lucas pumps. If you wish to run 100% vegetable oil you will need to add heaters to the fuel lines and use upgraded injectors etc cost of conversion is about 拢1000 depending on supplier. I run a 1996 2.8TD Mitsubishi Pajero on a 70/30 mix in winter and a 50/50 mix in summer have a look on our club web site www.pocuk.co.uk in the forum under bio fuels .
No this is not illegal you can even buy a machine now to clean the old oil up which is the best way. if you just put it straight into the tank old chip fat and oil has water content in it and could give you lots of problems with blocked fuel injectors and injector pump problems ,

I have had to do one or two clean up jobs already on this

also this ';emulsifys'; in the fuel lines which looks like old lard when it goes like that

Hope this helps
You must pay duty on ALL road fuel regard less.

You MUST keep records of all the oil that you use as road fuel and seek to pay the duty.

If you do get pulled by HM Customs and Revenue and you do not have complete records you'll loose you car plus a fine and estimated back duty

On the other hand you could chance it like the thousands of other people that are doing it.
It is, unless you register with HMR%26amp;C, keep records and pay fuel duty.

You can get caught out at a roadside ';dip test';, if they find anything but DERV in the system they'll check the records and if you haven't been doing the right thing they can sieze the car and take you to court. It's classed as tax evasion.
As I understand it, if you wish to produce your own bio fuel, you can produce 2500 litres, after which you need to disclose the fact and pay revenue. I think perhaps the advice you have been given, sorry, your ';friend'; is being confused with the penalty for exceeding the allowance. Strictly speaking, you ought, for your own protection, keep a record of the amount used.
your supposed to register it with the Inland Revenue and pay the appropriate tax, its technically tax evasion.
Sorry but phillip is right on this one, its a question of taxation or duty. Strangley though its Customs and Excise that are responsible for it.
I believe you are allowed to burn 2500 litres in any one year. Read this somewhere this week.
its not illegal as such but you have to inform the authorities if you use over a certain amount
how could it be illegal if your friend is using an environmental friendly alternative fuel?
They should overlook the taxes when going green. The laws are bs sometimes.
No way its same as BIO, the only illegal diesel is RED off road use, but if you put old engine oil in ! ( it turns grey )
No, it's not.
i think it is! but its better for the environment!
