What can happen if you had about 1/4 the amount of oil in car?

I had about 1/4 on the line probaly a little more. I have a 1992 bmw 325is. It has always had a very light sounding engine but may have a knock now. Please tell me what could of happened.


And is there any special oil treatments that mat help it run smoother?What can happen if you had about 1/4 the amount of oil in car?

well for 1 thing, fill it up with oil. i dont know about the knock, sounds like you ran it too low and now you have a bearing knocking.
just keep a check on the oil.. as long as you havent run it out of oil you should be fine. as for a treatment try some lucas oil stabalizer. It helps out a lot. You can get it at auto zone or advance..
dont you ever check the oil and water on the car?


You are not supposed to run a car on too little oil because it is not enough to constantly circulate thru the engine and lubricate the workings. You may have done some minor wear damage to some parts. Wake up.


Engine oil alone is all that is necessary to maintain your engine and most of the engine additives you see on the store shelves are just a lot of bull crap. AMSOL does however make some useful additives.
Ti is vary important to check your oil and other fluids once a mouth. If it is making different noise since the oil was low you shod take it to a mechanic. Also getting a tun up Wood not hurt.
You ran too low on oil, in a car that old, it can cause alot of problems because seals and rings and such are already old. the knocking is probably irreversable now. I would make sure there is nothing else except age that caused the oil to go that low (leaks and such)





Stay on top of the oil level.
