What would make your car burn oil?

I am due for an oil change and just decided to check my oil and it was pretty low, I have no leaks or anything and was wondering what would cause this. What would make your car burn oil?
If you engine motor oil is low without evidence of a leak on more than one occasion you could be burning the oil from one or more of the following problems:

1- Blocked or defective PCV system that would raise engine crankcase pressure and push oil past the valve guide or rear seals.

2- Worn valve guides and/or valve guide seals allowing oil to be drawn into the cylinder.

3- Worn oil control piston rings allowing oil to reach the combustion chamber.

4- Blocked oil return passages in the cylinder heads which blocks the motor oil from returning to the oil sump, and the oil is drawn into the cylinder through the valve guides.

You can determine if your engine is burning oil by examining the electrodes on all of the engine spark plugs. Oil fouling will be black in color and may be wet or appears as a ';baked'; on deposit that looks like a small bit of coal. What would make your car burn oil?
either your piston rings are bad or its you valves.
normally, it's worn piston rings.

Cars are just going to burn oil in normal operation. 1 quart per oil change is normal.
Oil consumption depends on two things: the valve guides and piston rings. If the valve guides are worn, or if there's too much clearance between the valve stems and guides, or if the valve guide seals are worn, cracked, missing, broken or improperly installed, the engine will suck oil down the guides and into the cylinders. The engine may still have good compression, but will use a lot of oil.
bad valve seals or bad piston rings.
worn piston rings , bad valve stem seals , leaking turbo

What hazardous chemicals or metals does used car/engine oil havE?

lead maybE?

toxins?

WHAT IS THE PROPER WAY TO DISPOSE OF ITWhat hazardous chemicals or metals does used car/engine oil havE?
Aluminum, lead, chromium, copper, iron, petroleum, zinc etc,

Lead, zinc, chromium, are toxic.

You should dispose of used oil, to an authorized facility such as an oil change service center or other auto service center. many city or county governments have designated locations to dispose of used oil.

Whats the best car engine oil?

I need some good engine oil for my BMW whats the best one out there?Whats the best car engine oil?
For standard oil, I recommend Pennzoil. I have had five vehicles go 100,000 miles with no problems and the people who bought them from me drove them for many more years because I would see them from time to time.

If you want a really GREAT oil, I would suggest AMSOIL synthetic. I read some independent labratory tests on that stuff and it was amazingly better at protecting metal parts then all the others. But it is a bit expensive. You CAN run it for more miles than Petroleum oils so it costs about the same in the long run. I switched my Harley to Amsoil and it ran quieter and cooler. That should tell you it is better then the ';dinosaur'; petroleum oils.

The second best synthetic would be Mobil one.

Hope that helps...Whats the best car engine oil?
all the very best cars run on Mobil 1 if you can afford it
MAKE SURE YOU USE THE CORRECT GRADE, MILLIONS ARE SPENT TRYING TO MAKE THE CARS RUN WITHIN GRADE AND MANY PEOPLE FILL THEM WITH CACK AND THE WRONG GRADE OIL, ANY TOP BRANDED SYNTHETIC WITHIN GRADE FOR YOUR CAR.
Use what the handbook says you should use
Castrol GTX Magnatec. Also you can't go wrong with a shot of Slick 50 in there too.

Keeps your engine sounding smooth as silk.
There is a really good site that will tell you all that you need to know...http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html

Worth the time to get to know more about this simple to over look but essential part of you pride and joy.

Paul
pennzoil
In this day and age , theres not much to choose between them, if you buy a 20/40.which means it stays good ( or keeps its viscosity) at 20 below c and 40 above, if you buy cheep, change it more often , which wont hurt anyway, for me that GTX is well over rated, on high mileage cars its got to be changed every year
We use Mobil1
what year. newer models recommend 5w40 european full synthetic oil. Pennzoil makes that oil. All depends on what year it is.
Mobil 1
I use CASTROL. Running it in a Dodge motor with over 350,000 miles and still has original crank and connecting rod bearings in it. No Bull. Great Oil!
Castrol is the best engine oil by a country mile
As reccomended by BMW - ask them.
royale purple its alittle pricey and full synthetic but it is the best its what racecars and performance cars use

Should I change car engine oil by milage or by months?

Generally speaking, people suggest to change car engine oil every 3000 miles or every 3 months.

I have a car that I don't drive much. I drive about 1000 miles in 3 months and it's been little over 3 months since my last oil change. So, in such a case, should I change this car's engine oil now since it's been 3 months since the last oil change? or should I wait until I reach close to 3000 miles even if it means waiting another 5 to 6 months?Should I change car engine oil by milage or by months?
The reason you change your oil is to maintain good viscosity which keeps metal parts from touching and creating friction. Viscosity is lost in oil as it is heated to great degrees and then cooled. So with that said it's mostly the mileage that you want to concern yourself with but even so I wouldn't let oil sit in my car for over a year regardless the mileage. 3 months of being in the car isn't a good reason to change your oil.Should I change car engine oil by milage or by months?
Once the oil container is opened, it starts to age. As it ages, the additives are lost.

Also one function of oil is to emulsify the water in the system, so if the emulsifier is all used up or died due to age it no longer protect the engine from condensation (water).

This water will be at the bottom of the oil pan and be the first thing that the oil pump picks up. While I know water is a good lubricant it is not some thing I want in the valve lifters (or main bearing). It does not help the rings either.

The end result is a short lived engine. But with your driving habits you will never notice it.

This in one reason that a low mileage car is not a good gamble and why I will buy a high mileage car before a low mileage one.

Change by months.
Changing your oil every 3000 miles is a scam. Generally car manufacturers recommends changing oil every 5000 miles. Read your service manual.

Why would oil go bad after 3 months? It can sit on the shelf in a store for years and still be fine.

I restore old cars for a hobby. I have a 1935 Ford truck with 7000 miles on it and have changed the oil in it 3 times over the last 12 years. 1st time was after a few hundred miles to clean out the assembly lube. 2nd time was 3500 miles and I just changed it again last week. The oil was still clean.
I've got the same problem and I change the engine oil once a year or 9,000 miles, whichever comes first using http://www.mobiloil.com full synthetic oil. Note that you can't decide when a fluid needs changing by ';looking at it';. You have to change it before any visible signs of deterioration are apparent. That's what ';oil testing'; is all about.
Correct mileage or quarterly. It's good insurance for your engine.

Stop and go driving is not the best for circulating oil.

Also, tires and battery age, even without mileage.

My car recommends 5, 000 mile oil changes. I don't drive much so I change at 3,000.
mileage...unless the low miles you do are hard driving, thrashing the nads off the engine etc especially if you only do short trips so the engine never warms up properly
MIND THE MILEAGE.NOT THE MONTH COUNT!
oil is good for evey 3000 miles so no you shouldn't have to. I change my oil when it turns black.

Whats wrong if the car drinks oil fast and hasent got an oil leak?

.Whats wrong if the car drinks oil fast and hasent got an oil leak?
'O' rings on your cylinders could be worn, check your gasket seals, check head clearance and spark gaps. Could be many, many things, if you are not technically and mechanically minded then leave it to the Pro's.Whats wrong if the car drinks oil fast and hasent got an oil leak?
You normally see burning oil coming from the exhaust as blue smoke in the daylight hours, but sometimes it does not show up as such and the only way to see it is to go out at night driving and keep your eye on your rear mirror, you should see clouds of pale smoke in the lights of cars behind you. This will be ,badly worn or stuck in the grooves rings, worn or burnt out exhaust valve guides and valve seats,it could even be a blocked crankcase relief valve causing the sump to pressurise the oil up the bores into the combustion chambers, just check the plugs, you will see .I would drop the engine oil out, check the relief valve and fill will new oil and fit new filter, wash or change the air filter, fit new points and check your tyre pressures, the old beast deserves a bit of love possum.
The simple answer is that oil is getting into the combustion chambers and it should not be, therefore it is being burnt with the fuel, please dont be fooled by other suggestions that the oil smoke changes colour depending on what time of day it is,oil burns blue in the combustion chamber all the time but it just depends on how it gets into the combustion chamber and where from as to its colour when ignited.

Blue smoke is usually oil from the sump meaning the piston rings are letting past and the oil is coming up from the sump but it will also be blue if your valve stem oil seals have hardened and oil is running down the valve stem. as other answers suggest if you have an oil/fuel mixture set up fault then black or grey smoke will appear. if you have an old ford you could spend ages messing about with mixtures and levels and in the end it really ain't worth it just keep topping it up until the engine eventually gives up.Unless you are prepared to overhaul the entire engine then I would nurse it until it dies and then get a new car or engine unit whichever you think is worth it at the time.

good luck my freind. .MACLAREN.
You will need to have the engine compression tested to find if it is worn pistons and rings or worn valve guides. After recording the pressures on each cylinder a small amount of oil is poured through the spark plug holes and the pressures taken again. If the second readings are the same as the first then it is the valves that are worn.If the second readings are greater than the first than the pistons or rings are worn
Older cars have metal wear - especially in the rings (on pistons). Consider using a heavier oil. Consider adding an oil additive that makes your oil heavier. Check the oil often! Check you radiator water too (when the engine is cool). Don't check it hot !! Any automotive store will have additives - they can reduce engine wear and oil consumption. Check you other fluids more often too like transmission %26amp; brake fluid. It can have a lot of mile left if you drive it gently and keep all the fluids up.
How many miles on the clock? could be worn piston rings, In which case it would chuck the oil out the exhaust. Does the car smoke badly? if so that's your answer.
Usually it's a worn-out, high-mileage, badly-maintained engine. Look for black smoke from the exhaust.
Engine is shot. Trade it in. Scrapage if it 10 years old, or some garages will take 8 year old cars.
It's knackered!
That's BLUE smoke from the exhaust. Black smoke indicates an improper fuel/air mixture.
Big ends small ends rings bore pistons, expensive

why? are you looking for fluid for your car or for your bike?I need to find Car Transmission Oil Comprable to V Twin Motorclycle Trasmition Transmission oil?
If you're desperate, then a 15W-40 diesel engine oil would be a somewhat close substitute to the motorcycle oil. The biggest difference between the motorcycle oil and normal engine oil is that the motorcycle oil does not have anti-friction additives. If an oil with anti-friction additives is used in a motorcycle, since motorcycles often share their engine oil with their transmission, those additives could cause the clutch to slip when it is engaged. A diesel engine oil doesn't have anti-friction additives in it either.I need to find Car Transmission Oil Comprable to V Twin Motorclycle Trasmition Transmission oil?
i use 20w50 in both motor and trans and i have done so since i brought it and with over 70,000 miles its still kicking

How do you know what kind of oil your car needs?

I dont have it written down.

I'm a dummy when it comes to cars. How do you know what kind of oil your car needs?
You can find this information in your owners manual. If your car is new, it should be marked in the engine oil filler plug. Most old cars uses 10W30 which is the most common grade of oil used in any type of automobile. Most newest cars (majority) still uses 10W30 and some uses 5W30. When in doubt, always use 10W30 because it is the most common grade of oil no matter what size of an engine is being used in an automobile. I always used synthetic oil. It is cleaner (no build up gum on the engine), easier to start and there's always oil on all moving parts compared to any conventional oil (parts are dry). Synthetic oil are very expensive, but it is the best oil compared to the regular oil. Good luck...How do you know what kind of oil your car needs?
If you don't have the cars book, any spare parts shop will know the right oil.

Car leaking oil will it cost alot to repair?

car is a 2000 tiburon. leaking from underneath engine. is it worth reparing?Car leaking oil will it cost alot to repair?
it depends on the leaking places but mostly not more than 100$Car leaking oil will it cost alot to repair?
Very small leaks are normal and need no repair. Larger leaks are first detected using an engine oil dye and black light to find the leak. Then you know how expensive it is to fix the leak. If you've kept up with your vehicle maintenance, any major oil leak repair should be worth it for a 2000 year vehicle. However, you should make sure your transmission was maintained according to the Hyundai maintenance schedule, and that you have had your timing belt changed on schedule.
It depends on were the oil leak is. If it's the rear main seal which seals the crankshaft to the engine block. It could cost a lot, the transmission would have to be removed. It could be oil running down from top of engine, a valve cover may be leaking. Try to locate the leak, starting at top of engine and working your way down until you find it.
It usually costs about 400 to 500 bucks to replace the seals. If it has to have the crank taken out to fix the front seal then maybe 600.A 2000 Tiburon is pretty valuable in the blue book so I'd say yes it's worth fixing.
it,s worth fixing. it,s probably just the valve pan gaskets leaking down or the oil pan is leaking. see if you can snug up the bolts some.

When or within how many months should I take my car for oil change?

I drive a Honda CRV.When or within how many months should I take my car for oil change?
3 months or 3,000 miles whichever comes first

older cars (10 or more years) you should use a heavier weight oil 20/50w, same if you live in cold region of the country

newer cars, sunny %26amp; warm, 10/30wWhen or within how many months should I take my car for oil change?
    Yhis answer is totally wrong.

The colder the climate, the thinner the oil, and vice-versa.

Every 6000 miles is also a much better frequency to change the oil, otherwise you are throwing money away! Report Abuse

No more than 3 months..... check the oil and if it is brown or black it is overdue... I check mine 1 month after I do an oil change.. then when it starts getting brown I change it. None of my vehicles has ever seen black oil..... also use 5W30 oil.
    follow manufacturer recommendations

I check my fluids every day, simple knowledge can prevent costly repairs
Typical usage 3 months or 3,000 miles of driving. Check your owners manual for recommendations with different driving conditions (towing, highway driving effect this).
they usually recommend around 3000 miles.

How I can get car oil out of the garage floor?

If it's a spill -- first cover it with kitty litter or an oil absorbing polymer. Let the litter or polymer sit for a few hours or over night then sweep it up. Then to help get the discoloration out you can either use a pressure washer or Dawn dish detergent, water and a push broom to scrub out the stain.

How I can get car oil out of the garage floor?
you can soak it up with cat litter. pour the litter on the oil and sort of mash and grind in the floor with your foot. They also make a special bag of mix you can get at the auto store but the litter works fine and is cheaper.

If the stain is still there when you sweep it up you can also power wash the garage floor. How I can get car oil out of the garage floor?
The best thing to use in this situation is Kitty Litter. Seriously, just go buy some at the store (I prefer Arm+Hammer Multi Cat since I actually own cats), make sure you cover the stain with a generous coating, let it sit for about an hour, and just sweep it up afterwards. Most, if not all of it should be gone. If there's some left, just repeat. This always helped get the stains off of my floor.
very hot water and oxyclean and a stiff bristled broom. the hot water opens the pours and the oxyclean does the drawing out. you need to rince it real well afterwards. stain marks may persist though.
Use kitty litter, any kind. The next step is to wear some old shoes or boots and grind the kitty litter into the stain. Grind it into dust and it will absorb much more.
You can spread some kitty litter as it is very absorbant, let it sit a while, sweep it up and repeat a few times if necessary.
    Acetone and kitty litter.
    use oil dry

Spark plugs with oil car wont start?

94 integra, car wont start 3 of the spark plugs have oil and 1 is dry. the car wants to start but it wont. cheked battery and alternator. cheked plugs and wet. what can it be? pls helpSpark plugs with oil car wont start?
You probably mean that the spark plug wells are filling with engine oil due to a leaking valve cover gasket. The oil you see is on the external white insulator of the plug, not on the inside cylinder electrodes. The spark plug wires should be wet with oil as well. Your engine is probably fine and all you need to do is have the valve cover removed and the gaskets changed as shown in the link below.

http://autorepair.about.com/library/illu鈥?/a>Spark plugs with oil car wont start?
depending on the situation resulting from the oily plugs,

you may need to do a compression test to see if you have blow-by caused by bad rings, or a clogged pcv valve.

that is if the car turns over and doesnt start. check for spark, sounds like your getting fuel, if you have a check engine light you may have to check the codes being thrown, and refer to a manual to see the potential problem. if you car isn't sparking, you can check the distributor, possibly a bad ignitor module.

you may be able to simply replace the spark plugs. with a little more information such as what happened when it quit running, if it had any history of burning oil or lack of power, if your getting spark, fuel, and the timing is correct, if the vehicle still turns over or doesn't at all. with that information it would be much easier to help pinpoint your problem. this information should get you started. I'm assuming it is a b18 non vtec integra. also if it is turning over slower than normal, you may have a starter that may be going bad.
    See this page:

    http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/engine/p鈥?/a>

It seems like you have worn piston ring. That major repair dollars.

    ====

If you decide to get the engine rebuild, make sure it is done by a real and regular engine rebuilder. Most mechanic hardly EVER do this job and can easily screw it up.

the good news is that the engine will be almost like new after the rebuild.

    Good Luck...
The wet plugs can't give enough spark to fire the gas in the cylinders. And, if you have 3 out of 4 plugs oil-soaked, I'm betting you've got fried piston rings in the engine. Not good, my friend.

  • What happens if you accidentally drop a oil bottle washer into the car's oil?

if it causes damage how much will it cost? What happens if you accidentally drop a oil bottle washer into the car's oil?
It really depends on the car as far as where it will be capable of travelling to depending on the location of oil filler. One thing is for sure however, if it manages to clog any ports within the engine it will destroy it. Take the valve cover off and remove it immediately while its still in one piece. Some valve covers have shields inside that will not allow it to make it anywhere but then some do not. What happens if you accidentally drop a oil bottle washer into the car's oil?
it will eventually melt and mix with the oil because it is petroleum based. it should not cause any major damage.
just take the pan off and get it out. it,s probably too big to go into the oil pan.

How can I reduce how much oil my car burns?

I have a crappy little 91 ford escort, and it burns oil like nobody's business. I have to top it off every time I get gas.

Is there a certain viscosity of oil I can use that will help? Will shifting earlier or later make any difference? The engine has a tendency to overheat...would fixing that help? How can I reduce how much oil my car burns?
Use higher viscosity oil.. Viscosity is a rating sort of like ';thickness'; 20W is heavier than 10W, - 30W is heavier than 20W etc.---! Since summer is 'upon us';, - you could run 40W or possibly even 50W oil! Also you could try a ';thickener additive'; like STP! I would start by putting it with the same viscosity you are now using first though!

If you have little pools of oil where-ever you are parked, -possibly you are leaking a lot! You could try ';Stop It'; available at WalMart - (in with oil additives and carb -injector cleaners)--and lots of other places sell it also. It is supposed to stop all those little ';seepy leaks'; that seem to occour as car gets older! Costs about $4.60, - so it won't waste much if it doesn't work! However this will not ';fix'; torn seals on crankshaft, - (or camshaft -- if it has pulley for belt outside block area!)

Now about the ';overheating probelm';,.-- whether you get it to ';burn'; less oil, or not does not matter here, -- if it overheats enough (and often enough) it will blow the headgasket, and then you have a non-driveable car!!

Yes overheating could cause it to ';use more oil';-- the hotter it gets, the ';thinner it gets';, -- at about 500 degrees, it is same consistency as water! Which of course is going to ';squirt between worn rings, and valve seals, and valve guides like mad! All these things contribute to ';oil burning';!! It will aso squirt out of bearings of crank and rods, - making it wear quicker than usual, (and have very low oil pressure!)

Start out by checking to see if pressure cap is good if it runs right temperature ';most of the time'; it probaly is not thermostat causing problem! Make sure cooling fan is working properly! Check to make sure radiator is clear of leaves and other kinds of garbage! High pressure air, or water from engine compartment out will push stuck stuff out in reverse to how it came in! Wouldn't hurt to check and see if PCV valve isn't plugged up too! This could cause high pressure inside crancase and push more oil into rings etc!

Have any mechaincal ability? Check Craigs list and find one with bad transmission (or wrecked), and swap out engine, -- These cars have both engines and transmissions notoriously bad, (or maybe it is the people that drive them) Anyway transmissins go bad often. Engines go bad because people don't change oil often enough and they have weak oil pickup system that colggs up with sludge-- causing bearings to go bad! *** I see ones in my area selling for as little as $100-- sometimes for free (if you will haul it away)! Even if it costs $200, - scarp will bring about $75, - as scrappers getting about $200 a car for metal! If you end up with good engine, -that is cheap job (using your labor to do job)!!How can I reduce how much oil my car burns?
Overheating would not contribute to your engine burning

oil. You have a serious oil leak somewhere. Look under

the car and you might see where it's coming from. It could

be something easy as a loose oil filter. There are some

additives you could use, but it sounds like the leak is too

    severe.
if it burns it theres nothing you can use to fix it but rebuilding... and anytime you a over heating problem your saving your car some time.. but your car is shot im thinking
just get some of that stop smoke additive that you put in your oil, it makes your oil thicker

Why does my car need oil every 2 weeks?

I don't think this is normal, but we need more oil every 2 weeks and I know it isn't leaking out. Plus every once in a wile I smell something like burning wax coming through the heater. Why does my car need oil every 2 weeks?
It sounds like your car is leaking oil internally into the antifreeze. Check the level and colour of your anti-freeze. It's not normal for this to happen, and it will cause your engine to seize eventually if you don't do anything.

The smell of burning wax is strange, not sure what that would be. If you have air fresheners in your car, remove them. Why does my car need oil every 2 weeks?
Sounds like you need deep pockets. You may need new valves, rings, or have a leak internally.
wrong place to put question dawn, try cars
I am sorry to hear that. Is your engine burning oil? You shouldnt be adding oil every 2 weeks.

See a mechanic for second opinion.

May be it is time to replace it. Used cars are very cheap in US of A.
it can be leaking and u just cant see it.that smell is the oil burning,u have a serios problem u need to take car to mechanic who knows what he is doing and have it checked out could be bad seals or plug leaking get it looked at soon
    why is this in hair?
    Uhh....beauty and style%26gt;hair?

Put this question in cars- your car is a piece 'o shiite- the engine is probably going kaput. There's nothing good about an oil-guzzling auto!

Can somebody tell me how to get car oil or grease stains off the drive way and the garage please?

We use dry laundry soap in the lube pit at the shop I run. Wet the area down sprinkle the soap over the area then work it in with a broom and wash away the oil and grease. Works like a charmCan somebody tell me how to get car oil or grease stains off the drive way and the garage please?
I always like to use typical MINERAL SPIRITS on oil/grease stains first, it breaks them-up. Then I get good OIL-DRY, name brand only oil-dry, and I thoroughly cover the area. Watch out for rain, it will turn the oil-dry into a brick cake. Let it sit for around half a day to a day. You could end up with a cleaner spot than the rest of the drive way/garage floor. Mineral spirits and oil-dry works realy good, you'll be surprised.

You know what else is cool, most of the time you don't even have to scrub the area with the mineral spirits because it cuts so good, and the oil-dry will be good to reuse again and agian, as long as it doesn't turn dark and wet looking. You can get both of those things at the HOME DEPOT or a MENARDS nearby. Would it be worth the $20 you will have to invest ?Can somebody tell me how to get car oil or grease stains off the drive way and the garage please?
Concrete Degrease you can buy a big gallon bottle of the stuff at wal-mart for $8. Pour on spot let it sit for a minute and then rinse. Easy as pie even my mom uses the stuff after I mess her driveway up.
Use cat litter. It's cheaper but really the same thing as commercially sold floor dry. After the cat litter soaks up all the grease and oil, Dawn dish liquid and a pressure washer really help with the stains.
    http://www.latexite.com/pr-cleaner.html

Or try going to Home Depot and ask for drive way degreaser.

    Good Luck...
get some degrease apply over oil or grease and with a power washer hose it down then reseal good luck.

SHOUT IT OUT WITH SHOUT! no, really, get the shout that comes in a aereosol can(it's for laundry) and you will be so happy with the results! works with any greasy stain including red lipstick! i promise. What is the best way to get car oil and grease from a sweat shirt?
As funky as this sounds....wet it well with WD-40, and let it soak for a minute.....then rinse it with water.

Do this a few times. then wash it. I expect it will get it out for you, unless it's already been washed and *dried*.
I got it out once by putting dishwashing soap on it before I put it in the wash. The dishsoap cuts the grease.
I use a product called Oil Eater Cleaner and Degreaser made by KAFKO (1-800-528-0334). I bought it at Costco a couple of years ago. It came in a gallon container with a spray bottle too. I use it on any laundry that has a greasy spot. Just spray and throw in the washing machine. Good for cleaning driveways, machinery, etc., but it hasn't hurt any of my clothing yet!
Dawn, is the best it cuts thru the grease.

My car leaks oil. My options are to fix each leak or replace the engine. What should I do?

My car leaks from four or five different places. Three gaskets and a camshaft need to be replaced and I think there may be another leak! The oil drips very slowly though. Its a Chrysler Cirrus, '97 with 150,000 on it and it runs great. The body is still in great shape too, only a couple of rust spots. I wanted to give this car to my mom. Is it worth the trouble fixing it?My car leaks oil. My options are to fix each leak or replace the engine. What should I do?
As long as it's not the rear main engine seal. (very labor intensive to get to), the other gaskets should be relatively inexpensive to replace.

Even if you can cut the number of leaks in half, as long as you make sure there is enough oil in the engine, it should be fine to drive. My car leaks oil. My options are to fix each leak or replace the engine. What should I do?
well it will be cheaper to repair the engine than to replace it but i do recommend a good shop at least if they screw up they have to fix it if they aren't certified than they can just look at you and laugh good luck
just fix the leaks.all it would take is gasgets and or seals.that could be done up under 150.00
I agree. The engine will cost thousands. Fix the leaks!

  • Is it ok to change a car from oil to synthetic oil at 100,000 miles?

I just bought a 98 Grand cherokee and it has almost 100,000 miles on it. Will it be ok if i make it synthetic oil now?Is it ok to change a car from oil to synthetic oil at 100,000 miles?
As an AMSOIL dealer and user, I have been asked this question many times, yes, but only if your vehicle does not burn or leak oil. As to the cost yes it costs more. but with AMSOILs 25,000 mile change schedule, yes research has been done and proven to be OK, the cost come in line with non synthetic oil. Also engine wear is decreased, extending the life of your engine. Environmentally there is less waste oil and pollution in the air, better gas mileage, less friction and heat. Whats to question? Is it ok to change a car from oil to synthetic oil at 100,000 miles?
    Yes, it will be ok
yes it will be good for the engine
No problem. I was thinking about a high mileage oil for mine.
The change is no problem but not a wise choice if the engine is already using any appreciable amount of oil due to the cost factor..
    Castrol Oil says,';Yes, it is okay.';
go fot it change everything to synthetic
Synthetic oil is way too expensive. There's nothing stopping you, but you have to ask yourself what the benefits would be of doubling the cost of oil for a car that already has 100,000 miles on it. I considered changing to synthetic in my Neon to get better fuel mileage, but the shop I go to told me that it wasn't worth it. Simple math tells you that, but I had no idea how much synthetic oil costs until they told me. You will most likely never recover the cost and you will probably see no benefit. That's what I have determined, anyway.
OF COURSE!!!, and don't believe the crap about not being able to mix syn and conventional or changing back to conv. after syn....

NOW syn does not cover up pre existing leaks that conventional has maybe with either sludge or seal swelling.

I'd go for it, you can always change it back.
yeah, but once you go synthetic you cannot go back
DirtyDog has the correct answer, if you switch oils.

If that Grand Cherokee has the 4.0 Six, I strongly recommend the change.
When switching to synthetic oil in higher mileage vehicles, its best to have an initial short (2,000 to 3,000 miles) oil change, both oil and filter. This will allow the synthetic oil to clean some of the engine deposits that have accumulated over time. Following this initial short oil change, continue with your normal oil change interval.
synthetic oil is better than ordinary oil, specially on old cars.its better to change it.
The change to synthetic itself will do no harm but because it will cost much more, the switch at this mileage will not be advantageous as the wear of the engine will consume more oil. It works better with a new motor.

Is regular car oil alright for lawnmowers?

5w-30???Is regular car oil alright for lawnmowers?
NO, regular 30 wt is the best, a detergent oil, 5w-30 is too thin, and will damage the engine,Is regular car oil alright for lawnmowers?
Actually, the answer to this varies with the type of lawnmower engine. For example, the previous answer regarding non-detergent is generally right for some but manufacturers differ.

For example, I have a 20 inch push mower with a 3.5 Hp Briggs and Stratton engine built in 1986 and the instructions state:

';Use a high quality detergent oil classified ';For Service SF, SE, SD or SC';. Detergent oils keep the engine cleaner and retard the formation of gum and varnish deposits';.

Followed by SAE Viscosity Grades stating

use SAE 30 when outside temp is between 40 to 100F

use 10W-30, 10W-40 when outside temp is between

    0 to 100F

(as if you're going to be mowing in sub-freezing temps!)

It's probably best to ask a local power mower repair facility for their input as well.
You didn't mention if you were referring to the fuel or crankcase for using the oil. Automotive type oil can be used in the crankcase as long as it meets the manufactures specs. A 2-cycle oil is used when blending fuel on a 2 stroke engine. There is usually a label for the correct mix ratio. Good Luck.
NO NO! use the straight 30w non detergent if you can find it. ask for it where you buy lawn mowers and grab a couple. Your mower will out last every one else's.

Is taking a girl with me when I get my car's oil changed a romantic first date?

I was also thinking, while we were waiting for the oil to get changed, I would bring my DVD player and we could watch my Michael Spinks vs. Gerry Cooney boxing DVD in the waiting room.

I would also buy her a diet coke from the vending machine.

Will this win her heart? Is taking a girl with me when I get my car's oil changed a romantic first date?
Well, personally, I would rather see the Lennox Lewis vs. Mike Tyson fight from 2002. Seeing Tyson go down for the 10 count gets my engines revvin'! Make it a diet ';cherry'; Coke, and you have yourself a new forever partner. (well, at least until the sex gets boring)

And yes, I know it wins MY heart. Nothing says romance like men pummeling each other, routine car maintenance and artificial sweetners. Is taking a girl with me when I get my car's oil changed a romantic first date?
    Depends-

Are you two already close? Like, are you good friends with her and you're just interested in being more than friends? If so, she might think it's funny and cute if you do that.

On the other hand, if you've just met her and you think she's cute and want to get closer then you should take her someplace more romantic. Maybe if, while you get your oil changed, you go to a park or a movie or something it will work out better. You could possibly take her out to lunch at a close by restaurant or something like that.
HAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAH I AM LAUGHING SORRY NO... Take her somewhere out to dinner or get a movie and take it home. IF she is really into you she will want to cuddle and be where its dark and not where people will be staring at you to watching a movie in a car shop. Okay and a boxing movie get something that she like and suck it up if you dont and show interest.

If you want to stay cheap rent her favorite movie and if you have a nice finished off basement go down ther light the fire place make some pop corn and get some coke and watch it with her there and get her favorite take out food like chinease or pizza or get food to go from a resturant like olive garden right befor she arrives trust me she will love it.

Forget the oil change you really need dating help sorry and good luck
Are you thick, if my boyfriend had of taken me to get his oil changed the first time we went out %26amp; asked me to watch boxing with him. I wouldent have give him a second look. Yes he did take me out in his car %26amp; boutght me a drink but we sat in a park and kissed the hole time nearly a year and half on we are still together. Dont take her to get your oil changed you twat!
    You know I want to say.. ';YES!';

In the end if you have the right Chemistry it wouldnt matter what you two do together. If you like Superficial women and you know she is though I would take her for a chezburger to Mc Donalds atleast lol j/k you get my drift though, If a girl that will support you is what you want on your Oil change and DVD boxing matches... Then by all means on every level do this.

    Be the pack leader.

    -iJoey
LOL I hope you are joking, this is not a good first date at all. pick her up after your oil change and go for a picnic that you packed and sit in the park away from traffic and other people. no one wants to smell gross fumes and sit in a garage.... make time for her.
Sure it will..... but end the date with a really big bang...something she will remember you by. Take her to McDonalds and let her order off of the dollar menu and then tell her that she will have to pay because you just spent your last dollar on the oil change.
Jaquot, in case you are serious; try and think more of things you will both like. Don't have your own interests as a starting point.

I would suggest going on a walk in the park or at the beach. Maybe grab something to eat for lunch.
This has to be a joke. If you are that stupid thinking really is this a good first date and have to ask about it you should be dating.
uh.....no. that isn't romantic at all.

try dinner or a movie. that would be a good date.

or just go for a walk in a park or at a beach n just talk to her.
OMG! Not romantic, I don't think she will think that's romantic. Try taking her to dinner or to the movies, even to the park but not to get an oil change. Not as a first date. :)
It would be more romantic than shopping for a vacuum cleaner.
No. If you buy her a Diet Coke, she'll assume you think she's fat. Buy her a regular Coke and you're GOLDEN! :D
u can not win her heart wit that, u can just take her out to a really nice beautiful resterant wit really great food, that would be a perfect first date for u two
Oh yea! You got it dude! If only we could all have your romantic insight and creativity. EVERYONE!!!! FOLLOW THIS GUYS ADVICE!
if you take her to the taco truck it would be perfecccccccccct...
Normally, I'd say not. But I guess it really depends on the girl...

Although, if she does like it, I'd be a wee bit 'curious' if I were you ;-)
Only if she is a mechanic.
    ha, siike.

she'll probably think you're really lame and probably won't ever go on a date with you again. that's horrible.
    absolutely
    erm. not really romantic

and it wont win her hear;)

you should take her out to a fancy resteraunt, your treat (:
Yes, then you could allow her rub your nasty feet too. That will seal the deal! lol
Lol yeah of course it will ! hahahahaha Your such a romantic huh
    Yes good idea!
i hope your not serious cuz if you take a girl on this date dont expect a 2nd one
Thats a great plan! GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!
if she likes the same stuff as you i guess
haha no, please dont, i hope this is a joke.
haha, getting my cars oil change has to be the most boring thing...

    DEF.think of something more...mind stimulating.
    hell no
    you sound like a loser

Can used motor oil damage car paint? How do you get it off the car paint and windows?

Some morons were changing oil right beside my car at a service station, and used motor oil splattered all over the side of my car. They took to to a car wash. However, now there are streaks all over the side. Can used motor oil damage the paint in the long run? Also, how do I get this off my paint and windows? Thanks for your help! Can used motor oil damage car paint? How do you get it off the car paint and windows?
orange hand cleaner takes it rite offCan used motor oil damage car paint? How do you get it off the car paint and windows?
If you're sure proof positive that it's used motor oil on your car paint it will not damage it. For complete and safe removal buy a gallon can of mineral spirits or WD-40 and wash it down. The issue will be that either product will strip off any remaining wax coating on the paint.

Think of it this way: People accidentally spill gasoline on the side of their cars everyday and the paint doesn't come off. Motor oil isn't as nasty as gasoline as far as a paint stripper goes.

In any event after the mineral spirits or WD-40 trick, wash the car with Mothers car wash soap and re-wax. If the glass continues not to suit you, spray each pane of glass down with Stoners Glass Cleaner avalable at Walmart's automotive section.
Used motor oil will not damage your paint, or windows, no more than leaving the streaks, that you are seeing, now. That is going to be the worst of it. I can understand where you are comming from, though, It shouldn't have happened, in the first place. They should be more careful. Espically, in business, for the public. The oil will eventually wash off the paint, and, the windows. You may want to consider using something like Dawn dish soap. Like they say... Dawn takes away grease, so it will probably take away oil, as well. Maybe not in the first application, but, after several washings, it no doubt will remove the oil from the paint, and the windows. You could also try Oxy Clean... This stuff seems to work wonders. Again, maybe not on the first application, but after several washings... The oil should be gone. Oil leaves a residue on anything it comes in contact with, it seems. If you have ever seen oil on the water, it leaves a kind of film-like residue, where it is. I think, after several washings, you'll have nothing to worry about. Just be patient... It may take some time to wash off the oil, along with the residue, itself. In the future, I think I would pick a different service station.
Relax,it isn't going to hurt the paint. At worst it will need new wax to remove any streaking after the oil is washed off with detergent.
Wash it a few times and use lots of soap, hand wash if possible. It probably won't damage the paint unless it's left on for a long time
    de-natured alcohol
use wax on your car and side windows. that should take it off.
I'd use some good detergent. I don't think its any long lasting damage. If not taken them to small claims court.

Clutch in car leaking oil down to the pedals area?

clutch was leaking oil, can start the car but can't put it into first gear. how did this happen and is it expensive to fix.Clutch in car leaking oil down to the pedals area?
The primary seal is leaking in the MASTER cylinder (not the slave) and the fluid is leaking out of the rear of the cylinder and onto the floor of the car.

Because of this leak, air has entered the hydraulic system and the clutch won't withdraw so that you can't select gears.

You either need a new master cylinder or a repair kit, depending how bad it is. This shouldn't be too costly.

Jules, Automotive lecturer. Australia.Clutch in car leaking oil down to the pedals area?
the slave cylender has wore out replace the slave and bleed the system should beok after that not too exp apx150 -300$$$$$
there should be no oil in the clutch area at all.. can you put the transmission in first gear before starting and then start. if it will not go into first gear at all could be bent shaft...scyronizer or shifter linkage

Why my car Low oil light sometimes comes on when I start the car.?

Sometimes it will come on when i start the car and then the other times it wont come on. I checked the oil and its full. What could be the problem? I have a 1990 buick rivieraWhy my car Low oil light sometimes comes on when I start the car.?
When you first start the car, it takes a few seconds for the oil to circulate and build pressure. The light will be on until this happens. If you are using a fairly heavy grade of oil, it will take longer for the cold oil to build up pressure. If the car is in good condition, runs well with little oil consumption, I would use a 5-W30 semi-synthetic oil, and see what it does. Why my car Low oil light sometimes comes on when I start the car.?
My car would do that because I parked on an incline.

the oil sending unit is probably getting ready to go bad.

I usually run a little heavier oil in summer and lighter in winter but either will work fine.
A heavy weight oil will benefit your older car.

If you live in a southern states were it gets hot in the summer months, I recommend a 10w50 oil...
you wouldnt have to use the 10w40. i have a 88 olds and i use 10w30 all the time, but if you want to use the 10w40, it wont hurt it.

Is there any difference between motorcycle oil and car oil if the velcosity is the same?

The reason being motorcycle oil cost three time more at cycle shop compare to KragenIs there any difference between motorcycle oil and car oil if the velcosity is the same?
    viscosity is the same

automotive oil is formulated as a engine crankcase oil

motorcycle oil is formulated for 3 jobs, a crankcase oil, a transmission-gear oil, and a wet clutch oil.

The most important difference is the wet clutch oil, automotive oil won't work cause of the energy saving formulation will cause a wet clutch to slip.

the average motorcycle engine is a high performance engine, pumping out 4 times more horsepower compared to the bigger size of an automotive engine and the correct formulation of motorcycle oil is important, this oil works harder and more and more is expected from motorcycle oil, that's why it costs more.Is there any difference between motorcycle oil and car oil if the velcosity is the same?
The myth that there is a difference is just that, myth. Many years ago they had Yamalube for Yamaha 2 cycle engines and Mercury ';quicksilver'; for Mercury outboard engines. I noticed that at the Honda dealer yesterday, people bought Honda oil. Believe me, unless it is Castrol, Quakerstate, or Penzoil, it is the same for the most part. The additives aren't in the same quantities from one to the other but they are mostly compatible from one brand to the other. Synthetic oils shouldn't be mixed with petroleum bases but unless otherwise stated, synthetic oils are compatible to other synthetic oils.
I buy the best oil I can find for mine, it has stayed functional for 30 years. But no, I do not buy Honda brand motoroil for my Hondamatic. I use a good grade of fully synthetic oil, MOBIL 1 Extended Performance oil, though, as it gives extended lifespan to the oil, and it come in a weight that no one else has, 15W-50. It get hot down here in the summertime and I like the idea of 50 weight oil (at least in a non-harley) that is guaranteed against lubrication failure for 15,000 miles.

NOW it only takes 3 quarts of oil to completely change the engine and Auto transmission oil out. So how much cheaper is Kragen? So I pay a bit more for my oil, but I have a bit of confidence in the brand name motor oil that I don't in Kragen. Now this stuff MOBIL ONE EP is more expensive than Kragen, but it meets the same standard API SL/CF.

As long as you change your oil EXACTLY AS SCHEDULED, cheap oil that meets the standards of API SL/CF is fine for any thing on the road.

But my Time and labor are worth something too. But for the extra dollar total, that it costs me to buy the Mobil one SYNTHETIC, a versus a house brand of oil, that gives me peace of mind, 15,000 miles between oil changes. And that saves me three oil changes over that time, labor I do not have to do, time for motorcycle maintenance as opposed to riding. And It does not void the warranty on my 30 Year old Honda to do so. If you have a warranty in effect, buy API SL/CF oil, keep your receipts, buy Fram oil filters and ALSO keep the receipts. Note it down in the log in the back of your owner's manual as proof of maintenance as the maker demands.

They have to accept it as proof, under US law. You should be fine, using the absolute lowest quality oil that meets API specs. It just doesn't do it for me.
Yes, there is a big difference. Cars are water cooled and motorcycles are air cooled, therefore they run at different tempatures. The bubbles in your oil is how you oil is cleaned. Dirt penetrates these bubbles and then is removed when it runs through the filter. Since water cooled engines run cooler, if you use that oil in a bike , the dirt can't penetrate the bubbles thus it is not able to clean itself.
The viscosity is the same, but remember that the motorcycle oil also has to lube the clutch and transmission.

If you look at a car the oil in the transmission is completely different than the engine oil.

Cars and motorcycles? IT IS NOT THE SAME OIL!!!

Motorcycles should have motorcycle-specific oil. They have to handle very different things than a car.
Why do you think they make so many different oils?

Gear oil is for gear boxes WD-40 is for door hinges 2 stroke oil is for 2 stroke motors and canola oil is for cooking etc. etc. A motorcycles engine is a combination of a transmission and an engine. A cars engine is just that an engine the transmission is a separate unit that requires its own lubrication system. So motor oil is only good for a motor not transmissions.

Motor oil has additives like friction modifiers it might not be as noticeable in a standard shift bike but try it in an automatic bike and the clutch will definitely slip.
Yes, first when you buy any kind of oil make sure it has the black sun burst badge on it. This means it has all of the additives in it. In older bikes air cooled multiweigth oil is not a good bet. Yamaha Lube is very good oil. In the last few years bikes will run car oil. In the older ones is the problem with wet clutches and the additives. From Drag racing I have learned what oils break down quickest. Castrol oil petroleum broke down first , Pennzoil next The best I found was Valvoline it would make a day of racing in the heat we have down here. My new bike runs on Castrol synthetic 5-50 real good buy this is a syn oil and water cooled eng. That is all I run in my vehicles. But my neighbor would tell you something else. What it boils down to use good oil not cheap oil and if it is a older air coooled motor single grade oil. And above all else what it tell ls you in your owners manual. Even at 6 dollars a quart that is cheap compared to a motor.
    Oil is oil.

Don't let the il-informed convince you otherwise.

How do you get car oil off concrete?

There are some special solvents that will get about 90% of the oil off of cement. A power steam cleaner can get a little more off, but a year of wet winter weather will also help if you add some Tide laundry soap, and a stiff scrub brush at least once per week.

How do you get car oil off concrete?
Get some clay based kitty litter--the cheap stuff-- and pour it on the oil and rub it in with a piece of 2x4. Just a block of wood. This should lift the oil out of the concrete. If it is just a few drips it won't take much litter to get it up. You can also get oil dry at an auto parts store but it is the same clay based granules. Kitty litter can be bought at the grocery. How do you get car oil off concrete?
I always use kitty litter. Just pour it over the oil and crush it in with your foot, then sweep it up. This is actually a military technique.
Kitty litter works for me. Cover the oil with kitty litter and let it sit overnight.

i've used dawn dish washing liquid, put some on the oil scrub a little and wash off.

What non-synthetic (conventional) car oil would you guys recommend?

I use Mobil Clean 5000 right now. The UOA's(Used Oil Analysis) on bobistheoilguy.com are not sufficient enough to give me good data. I really doubt Mobil would make a bad oil. The car runs wonderfully with it, and I drive 70% highway miles so there's no ';severe'; driving for me to worry about with shorter OCI's(Oil Change Intervals). I particularly like the 5000 mile guarantee. I use purolator oil filters only. My car is a 1991 Toyota Camry, so I don't use synthetic. Older engines like this one don't seem to be designed for synthetic oil from what I hear. (The car engine needs an overhaul because it does some slight oil burning, which is my other question here that has already been resolved) I was just wondering if for example someone drives the same car as I do, and has a lot of miles like I do (228,700). I just want to keep this car running as much as I can until I need to overhaul the engine. So what's your favorite conventional oil? What non-synthetic (conventional) car oil would you guys recommend?
i own a repair shop, and synthetic is designed to run in older engines and help them also,my service truck has over 200 thousand on it,and it runs synthetic in it,and it does real good with it i would stay with Mobil one as an oil or Pennzoil i have used it before and i like it a lot,it does real good in any vehicle you put it in,, it or Mobil one is the only oil i ever use and i never have any complaints from any of my customers on any of it,good luck i hope this help,s.What non-synthetic (conventional) car oil would you guys recommend?

yes, CO will be present even in the burnt gases......

For a car oil change frequency is it best to consider the KM or the length of time in between oil changes?

It depends. If you travel on the highway most times, then it is okay to wait until the length of time between oil changes is expired. However, if you only drive short trips, such as around town or to the grocery and home, then you should go by the mileage. Highway travel is the best thing for an engine. It keeps the system clean and free of build-up. However, short trips can tear up an engine quicker than anything if it is not properly maintained. Hope this info helps you.For a car oil change frequency is it best to consider the KM or the length of time in between oil changes?
Length of time without use is of no consequence. It is quite necessary to be changed after approx 10000 KmsFor a car oil change frequency is it best to consider the KM or the length of time in between oil changes?
Every 3 months, or 5,000 kms. whichever comes first. Following this inexpensive routine should provide you with many years of trouble free motoring.

  • Why cant i use normal car motor oil once i used synthentic or synthentic blend?

will this damage my car some how if i start using normal car motor oil instead of synthentic? Why cant i use normal car motor oil once i used synthentic or synthentic blend?
You can switch back at any time.

And you can mix them. Ever heard of semi-synthetic? It's a mix.

The other guy has it backwards. It's the synthetic that sometimes leaks. Why cant i use normal car motor oil once i used synthentic or synthentic blend?
Youll be fine, just dont mix them. Synthetic has more detergent properties, and bonds to parts better. Sometimes if you switch back, it will start to leak because the gunk plugging the holes is gone.
It won't hurt your car one bit by changing to regular oil from synthetic, just drain all the synthetic out and change the filter and fill with regular oil.
suggest that I have switched back and forth......no problems encountered

What happens if i put my car oil in...where you check your oil and not the actual black oil cap where it goes?

you know that pipe... where you have the metal stick to check your oil?.... that one.. i put it in there instead of the actual black cap you take off and put the oil in.What happens if i put my car oil in...where you check your oil and not the actual black oil cap where it goes?
nothing. the pipe you put the oil in is connected to your oil pan. the place where your suppose to put it is on your heads. if you just added oil it should be fine. if you did this with an oil change then it will still be fine, cause your oil pump will circulate the oil throught he engine before damage occurs.

good luckWhat happens if i put my car oil in...where you check your oil and not the actual black oil cap where it goes?
That is fine, you are okay. Just check the level after all the oil has had a chance to drain into the engine to see if you have the proper level.

How ever did you manage to get it in there?
The oil goes into the same place. You must have an very steady hand, or made quite a mess. I don't suppose you can come over and pour Cognac into my flask from the bottle.
    No problem, be happy!
its the DIP STICK, it should work but it will be messy and take forever
No worries - both lead eventually to the oil pan. Pouring it through the dipstick tube would probably take a lot longer, since it's a smaller, skinnier hole. The oil cap lets the oil drain through the engine to the oil pan, lubricating and cooling things along the way. That's why it's usually on the top of the engine.
HOW THE HECK DID YOU GET IT IN THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!
That will work okay. How do you get it to go in that little hole? Anyway it goes the correct place if you can do it.
nothin happens it will only take u alot longer to put oil in
It's not a problem but one has to ask why. Presumably you eat breakfast standing on a hammock.
It will be ok. Will just take you forever to get it down the skinny pipe.
What kind of car do you have? 2.2 gm cars had a big cap and a large tube with the dipstick built on the cap. if this is the case that's where you're supposed to put oil in. Otherwise I am wondering if you put the engine oil in the transmition dip stick tube because I don't see how you could ever get oil in a standard engine dipstick tube.
    Dipstick!!!!!!!!! (joking)

Thats the dipstick hole, fill all you like, glad your not being paid by the hour to do so.

Seriously the oil that makes it in will go to the pan, the rest on the ground. As long as you get the level right you wont harm anything but you patience.

    Cheers, happy filling!!!
it wont hurt a thing but ill bet you took forever to put it in
It's not good that's for sure but it's not going to make your car blow up or anything. I'd get to a mechanic next time it needs done though. You may have some ';smoke'; from the engine if any got on external parts under the hood- which will smell horrific but it will go away.

I'd check it again in a couple hours and make sure that it is draining to the proper place. If it's not I'd get to a mechanic that can fix the problem.
not alot of bad things will happen. in fact, other than it may make a mess, as it is difficult to pour into the dipstick tube I wouldn't worry. As long as you didn't overfill your oil level, it all goes to the same place (your oil pan). as long as you have the proper oil level, there is no danger at all.
lol nothing it will be fine.
Nothing happens other than wasting a bunch of time doing it through that tiny hole. It all goes into the oil pan... so it will not harm it in any fashion.

My car leaks oil from underneath the car, what is wrong?

i have a 98 oldsmobile alero, and my whole driveway is ruined because its leaks oil, what is wrong? how much could it cost to fix?My car leaks oil from underneath the car, what is wrong?
The Alero is front-wheel drive, so that narrows things down a bit. To troubleshoot this problem, first make sure all fluid levels are full to their respective marks. Each night, place newspaper under the engine between the wheels and from the front bumper to behind the front wheels. Make a note of where you see oil spots, then open the hood and follow the spots upward.

If by chance this is the 3.4L GM corporate engine, and the oil spots appear just right of center of the vehicle and about 10-12 inches behind the bumper, then you may well have the dreaded ( but repairable) Intake manifold gasket leak, or the head gaskets are leaking. I have a 2002 Pontiac Montana van with the 3.4L engine, leaked oil regularly, and it had to have both head gaskets and intake manifold gaskets replaced. And now it doesn't leak. And GM covered all but $300 for the head machining.

Once you have identified the point of the most leaky spot, take a plastic pan (get a cheap pan from the local Target, Walmart or k-Mart) and put it in the path of the leak. Once you have a sample, you should be able to identify the type of fluid. Then go back and check the fluid levels everywhere and you should be able to nail the culprit.

Good luck and happy hunting !My car leaks oil from underneath the car, what is wrong?
Its a bad gasket or seal, crawl under and look up from where the leak on the ground is, then you will be able to find the leak, then take it to a garage and have them look at it.
your whole driveway is not ruined. it can be cleaned but your engine might have someissues if you run to loww on oil. you have a leak nobody here knows where because you dont either, we cant see it , we have no crystal ball so got to a shop and get an idea from an auto tech.
Heres some possibilities: It could be a valve cover leaking, oil cooling line, oil filter, head gasket, oil pan, rear main seal, or on some, the dipstick tube, but unlikely.
What is wrong depends on where the leak is. Park over a large piece of cardboard on a day when it's not going to rain and you won't have to leave in a hurry. Let the car sit there for at least a few hours (overnight would be better), and then look on the cardboard to see where the oil is coming from on the car (your car is front wheel drive, so the leak is almost definitely from somewhere in or around the engine compartment. First this will help you identify what part of the car is leaking, like the engine(front or rear main seal, any number of gaskets, oil drain plug, filter), the transmission(pan gasket, shaft seals or hoses), the power steering (rack, pump, or hoses), etc. Even if you already know what system (brakes, engine, transmission, etc.) of the car is leaking, this can also help you find the location of the actual leak. Basically, wherever the oil is dripping onto the driveway will tell you where to look under or in the car. Be careful that the oil isn't leaking from higher up and just running along other parts before dripping onto the ground, because that can make it look like the leak is somewhere it isn't. Once you know where the leak is, then it will be a lot easier to get an answer on how much it'll be to fix it. Who knows, it may be something as simple as the last time you got the oil changed they forgot to completely tighten the drain plug in the oil pan, or the oil filter wasn't put on tight enough. Unfortunately, you might find instead that the leak is because something major is going wrong and you need to either invest a lot in repairs or get a different car, but hopefully that's not the reason. In any case, the first step is locating the actual leak. Check the level of all the fluids in the car (or think about what you've had to fill recently), like the engine oil, the transmission fluid, the power steering fluid, the brake fluid, etc. This can help you rule out what could be leaking, because it probably isn't leaking if it's full. Good luck!
the oil is finding it way out of the engine and on to the ground that is the problem. might be a loose oil filter or it could be anything
It could be allot of things. Power steering, valve covers. oil pan, transmission, rear main seal, rack and pinion, etc. Have it checked out by an honest mechanic or friend whos mechanical.

How is car motor oil recycled?

Most car owners change their oil every 2000-3000 miles. Considering the millions of miles driven each year, it adds up to a lot of motor oil to recycle. How is the dirty oil recycled? Is it refracted and made in other products? Or is is somehow cleaned of the dirt and debri and resold as new motor oil again? How is car motor oil recycled?
The vast majority of used oil (oil that is recycled) in the US is burned for energy recovery - approx 80%.

Of this, most is used/burned for energy by asphalt plants.

Space heaters are the next biggest burner of used oil - e.g., garages, and others that generate their own used oil can, with certain limitations, burn that oil in on-site space heaters.

There is some used oil that is re-refined into lubricating products. Personally, I hope the last category increases in use.How is car motor oil recycled?
There are many practical uses for used motor oil. A primary use is to rerefine it into a base stock for lubricating oil. This process is very similar to the refining of crude oil. The result is that the rerefined oil is of as high a quality as a virgin oil product. In fact, rerefining used oil takes from 50 to 85 percent less energy than refining crude oil.

A secondary use of the used oil is to burn it for energy. Large industrial boilers can efficiently burn the used oil with minimum pollution. As a result some used oil is sent to power plants or cement kilns to be burned as fuel. On a smaller scale small quantities of used oil are burned in specially designed heaters to provide space heating for small businesses.
No one knows man, it is another stupid thing that he will do, just like letting out terrorists out of Guantanamo Bay.
I dump mine in the ditch, unless i need it to burn my garbage which then I just let it burn with the trash

Why cant i use normal car motor oil once i used synthentic or synthentic blend?

will this damage my car some how if i start using normal car motor oil instead of synthentic?

Let me know what kind of car I I will send you some Info.

Does the car have OBD 1, or OBD 2 System this is what need to know. In very rare cases connecting to the DTC hook up may cause problems. I have only seen it i1 time in 27 years of repairing cars. Can the computer used to diagnose my car at oil change centers do any damage, cause shorts?
It was like a 92 ford Tauras. To this day I dont know why because I never had any problems after this one. I replaced the ECM and no other problems came up. Report Abuse

The computer used at Dealerships and Quick Oil change places is just reading codes stored in a microchip.

There is no way to cause problems by the use of this machine. If the tech using the machine did something majorly wrong somehow (no way how to begin with) it would of blown a fuse.

A short is caused by a wire being pinched, a connection that isn't clean, a switch going out, etc. Has nothing to do with the use of a machine or attaching a computer to the car.

Like saying an apple is a moose, can't happen.

Depending on what the short is, is where you need to start. If it is the radio, the most common place is the volume control nob. If it is your interior gauge lights, then most likely it is your dimmer switch and so on throughout the car.
    NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    NO
No the computer they use to run a diagnose is made to work with your car its like the key board you are typing on its made to work with your PC. The only way a scanner could do something to your car is if it shorted out as it was hooked to your car. And then you would know it because the on-board computer would be shut down right then it woulden start to even leave the place where it was checked. So i would have to say NO!!!!
Well I only have about 24 years or so working on cars - my ASE computer control and managements systems is expired, but my FED cert is still good---

    and...

YES it ';Could'; damage your system

    SOME of those places use a diagnostic scanner (older ones mostly) that require Personality Keys -- IF -- they used the wrong personality key in the scanner interface it ';COULD'; cause problems - although without a LOT more details about what is wrong, and what kind of scanner they used, and what kind of car you have (the system it has) - then that is a ';Could'; not ';Would';

  • What is the best way to remove car/motorcyle oil off your driveway?

it will take sometime, but throw some sand on it. The sand will soak the oil up and then you can dispose the oil in the street gutter! LOL. Just kidding you can go to wal mart, pepboys, or any store that has an automotive department and ask for the prodcut from one of the sale person. I bought one about two years ago, but I forgot the name on the bottle. What is the best way to remove car/motorcyle oil off your driveway?
    BEST ANSWER

Take Kitty litter, and spread it thick all over the stain. then take some pure kerosene and pour it in the middle. scrub it around with a broom until its all soaked with the kerosene. then pour more kitty litter on top and wait a while for it to dry. then sweep it all up. now you will have another problem. a big super clean spot, in your dirty drive! Seriously, this will suck all the oil out of that driveway like a sponge, done it for yrs. Use diesel fuel if you like, even gas, but thats dangerous. any solvent that will float the oil so the litter absorbs it will do. your not gonna beleive it till you try it!What is the best way to remove car/motorcyle oil off your driveway?
first soak up as much as you can with oil dry (or kitty litter), sweep off, then use a degreaser to wash it off.

    From a Harley rider
Whatever type of oil absorbent you use, it's not going to just soak up all the oil.

Put the absorbent down on the area you want to clean.

Grind it into the cement with your feet.

Pretend you're back in the 50s and do the ';twist';.
By far the best results on concrete is to wipe up excess oil with a rag and then put on a thin layer of cement powder. Brush or rub around with a rag or something. If you put it on thin you don't even have to sweep it up and you won't see a stain.

If it's an old stain it still works just that there is know excess to clean up first.
Use Cat litter initially followed by the undiluted product Simple Green. Rinse thoroughly, no more stain!
The best thing I've found is Perlite,it is used in gardening. It will remove any oil and stain, just pour it over and stamp it down a bit.
do kitty litter, then messy as heck but it worked for one of my buddys, you can use gasoline and some rags. worked rather well for him. just don't smoke while doin it.

dont think it is prob epa friendly either, so watch for green neighbors!
A lot of these made me laugh, especially if the oil has been down for a while, the kitty litter will not work. Cheap easy way, spray carb cleaner on it, wipe away. (that is, if the cement has been trauled to a smooth finish.) If it is a sweeped driveway with ';sandpaper'; type finish, use the same stuff, but you are going to have to work it into it and use the least amount of water possible to wash it away, for the environment that is...
The stuff that the automotive stores sell particularly for removing motor oil, in my experience, never really works. Try some kitty litter. I know it sounds weird, but I used it a few months back on my drive way and it worked great, and its cheap. Just cover the entire stain in a thick pile so that there is litter for the oil to soak into. Trust me this works. If the oil is completely dry, this will even lighten the stain, if not take it all off, depending on the stain's intensity.
First absorb what you can as mention by others.

then use a diluted boric acid to wash a (concrete) driveway of the stain. For tar driveways look for a suitable driveway wash at the hardware store.
Ditto on the kitty litter (especially soda ash based kitty litter), followed by the laundry soap scrubbed in, and then rinsed or pressure washed.

For many, the kitty litter (applied twice) does it. The first time to soaked up the excess. The second time scuffed in with a stiff broom or your boot to lighten (whiten) the discoloration.
after using kitty litter etc... drench it in laundry detergent, then maybe power wash it. should get all of it.
Throw kitty litter down ASAP. Some automotive stores will even sell something just for this purpose, but it's basically the same thing.

Can anyone tell me does my car oil look ';creamy';? I was told the if water and oil mix the head gasket is gone?

BMW 316i compact sport, 1999, 1.9 ccCan anyone tell me does my car oil look ';creamy';? I was told the if water and oil mix the head gasket is gone?
One or two reasons come to mind:

Do you do lots of short trips where the engine barely gets hot? Causes condensation inside the engine.

Also, if I remember correctly, BMW has a little coiled filter in a hose that runs from the engine block to the intake / throttle housing that ventilates the crankcase. If that little joker is plugged up, causes all kinds of mischief.

On the other hand, if you really have a leaking head gasket, the oil will be very 'creamy' and nasty looking, more so than I can tell from your pics. Possibly including misfires or a shaky idle because of losing compression or a fouled spark plug. Also the same for a cracked block. But the clue for that will be 'disappearing coolant' - having to top up the coolant reservoir without being able to find any apparent leaks. And if the head gasket is going out, frequently the cooling system will be blowing off hoses or pumping coolant out of the radiator because of combustion pressure leaking into the coolant system. Sometimes you can idle the engine with the radiator cap off and it will be constantly 'burping' air out of the radiator. Can anyone tell me does my car oil look ';creamy';? I was told the if water and oil mix the head gasket is gone?
Your Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) emissions system sucks all the condensation and fumes out of the engine crankcase and injects them back into the intake manifold to be reburned. If the PCV system is clogged up or the PCV valve needs cleaning or replacement, then that's another reason you could see creamy white oil deposits. Try changing the PCV valve.
It looks good to me except for the low oil level. Change your oil and filter every 3000 miles and check it frequently. You should add oil if 1/4th quart low. Letting it go below the 1 quart mark will add to tarnish build up and is a good way to wreck the hydraulic lifters because they start to stick internally. A small amount of creamy oil on the oil filler cap may just be condensation. You don't have a problem.
It looks fine to me. If it is leaking then by your pics its not leaking very bad.

If you are worried do an oil change and if it looks like a mocha milkshake get a mechanic.
I believe you got water in it. that is what i heard happens when that happens. Google it! :)

This sounds like the old wive's tale of putting butter on burns. I would definitely not do this...........it could harm or even kill your dog. It could even be considered animal cruelty. I would recommend getting it treated by a vet. You can also try the natural antibiotic/antifungal Colloidal Silver. It can be found at most GNC stores. Mix it with some water in a spray bottle and spray it on your dog (2 oz per gallon). Also put about a teaspoon in your dog's water. It will kill the mange.

    Kim at: http://www.peaceful-organic-planet.com/n鈥?/a>
First of all, even if oil would work it isn't safe. With all the chemical additives they put in oil now days, it soaks into the skin and you would have a dog full of dangerous chemicals.

Secondly, NO it's doesn't work. It's an old wive's tale and completely dangerous to even try.
NO NO NO.... I work at a Pet Hospital. Take him to the vet. What we use is a substance called Mitaban for our dips. The reason why people started these WD-40 myths is because this Mitaban stuff smells like paint thinner. However it is specially made for killing Mange. TALK TO YOUR VET... only they can properly diagnose the disease, they can tell you the proper treatments.
NO.. infact it often does more harm than good.

If your dog has mange, it needs to go to a vet to be properly diagnosed and treated
whether or not its true its a bad idea. all of the above are harmful if ingested and may cause other skin problems. take your dog to the vet for a dip.
No and you would have to consider what do you think these will do when the dog digest the chemicals??

Mange need to be diagnosed as to what kind and then be treated.

Some mange is contagious not only to other animals but people. Some are hereditory and others are a fungus/bacteria each one is treated diferently.
Oh no. You should take your dog to the vet for treating mange. If you use WD-40, that probably do more harm to your dog.
God NO! These are nothing but old wives tales and horrible rumors. You'll make your dog very sick and poison him too. If your dog has mange get him treated properly at the vets!
NO! You MUST go to the vet and get your dog on medication! Depending on what kind of mange your dog has the treatments will varry, however they are not that much! Your dog can die from mange if it isn't treated!

    Good Luck!
I've never heard of that....but if my dog ever got mange I would get it treated properly so I don't hurt him more.
No, you should never use these things on any animal. It is not true that they can treat the mange at all. An animal with this needs to see a vet for proper diagnosis as to which type and proper treatment.
I can guarantee you, if you use any of those, you will not have to worry about taking care of the mange. They are all poison, and will all kill your dog, soaking thru his skin, and he'll lick it off. Who ever made up these ridiculous stories about these poisons curing anyhing, must have been some sort of animal hater.

How do you get water out of car oil?

I was checking my fluids in my 95 Camry and I turned it on before adding water to the radiator. My phone rang and I was distracted and accidentally added about 1 or 2 cups of water to the oil!How do I best remove most or all of it.Please be detailed about when to remove the oil filter. How do you get water out of car oil?
First, DO NOT start the engine. Drain the oil and remove the filter. Install new filter and oil. Run the engine at idle for 10 minutes and shut off. After the engine cools, change the filter and oil again. Be sure to wipe off the dipstick after the first change. this will get any water residue off. After the second change, run the engine for 10 minutes and shut off the engine. Check your oil. If there is any sign of water droplets on the stick, call you local repair shop for suggestions. How do you get water out of car oil?
Change your oil.Remove drain plug on oil pan,let drain meanwhile remove oil filter and replace it making sure to prime it with new oil also put some oil on the rubber gasket with your finger.Replace the drain plug.Fill the crankcase with the recommended OEM oil in the proper amount.Start the car and check for leaks.Shut the car off and check the oil and top off as needed
Water sometimes is present in oil systems when they have not been run for a while .....just run your engine and the water will turn to steam and dissapate from the engine breathers....that what they are for.....tickover for ten minutes will be ok .. dont worry
You need to change the oil and filter.

What kind of car oil to use?

I drive a 90' bmw 325i. I live in chicago and it's going to be spring time. What kind of oil should I put in my car? What kind of car oil to use?
BMW recommends a multigrade SAE 40 from -4 to 86 deg. F ambient. Use Kendall Full Synthetic SAE 5W-40. It is approved as a ';BMW Long Life Oil';. A model 325 holds 7 quarts but check with your manual. Good luck. What kind of car oil to use?
Look in the manual for your car, if you dont have a manual get a HAYNES form autozone it will tell you. If all else fails look on the OIL cap it may say, maybe even a sticker under your hood.
    MOBIL 25000. PROBABLEY 5 30 BUT 10 30 WONT HURT IT.
Go with what your owners manual recommends if you still have it.
    check the owners manual

  • How to stop my car buring oil?

I've got a '96 Ford Escort that is burning lots of oil. Its only done 65K. Its burning about a litre every 300 miles! I see masses of smoke when it goes over about 4000 rpm, and a little at lower revs. Is there anything can be done? Its got its MOT next week...How to stop my car buring oil?
Without spending money on replacing valve seals ect..

Use a good quality 20/50w engine oil (eg. Castrol High Mileage), Ford engines often respond well to this.

Don't use a synthetic as this will burn a lot quicker.

Also make sure that the breathers are clean (If you can smell oil when using the heater - they are probably blocked.)How to stop my car buring oil?
dont drive it lol den u wont burn oil
I had the same problem with my Golf Mk 1 a few years ago. I had thought it might be the cylinders that had got worn and it would need a re-bore etc. Happily it was the oil seals on the valve guides that needed replacing and was nowhere near as expensive. Let's hope that's all yours is, but you need to get it fixed anyway, for the sake of the poor sod driving behind you and your own embarrassment, not to mention the cost of the oil.
needs a ring job. ford's are infamous for that at high mileage
Tom: has you replaced oil seals? well the problem is worn out ';O'; rings on those pistions Because if that serrious

better take car in to dealer's garage we reccomend so all needed

    parts replaced only!
You need new pisten rings fitting, oil is getting past the worn rings into the combustion chamber and being burnt making the smoke. It could be an expensive job.
    JUNK IT!
    Try changing the PCV valve..
Junk it out, sell off the good parts. Tell consumers engine does burn oil.

    Buy a newer car!

Burning oil in the long run hurts your wallet!

Take it to a local Car Max they do trades and buy your older car.
In your left part as u look at the Yahoo!Answers is written : Categories; go down, u will see Buying %26amp; Selling, choose Selling; good luck !
Try 20-50W, or straight 40W just for the MOT. Don't leave it in in cold weather. All the additives just add some gum and make cold starts harder. It sounds like the rings are knackered, and that is not cheap. If you run a heavier oil, make sure that the battery is fully charged (maybe buy a new one) because it will draw more current to start (check alternator as well, and voltage regulator). Cold weather places higher demand on batteries at any rate. You might try Casite Motor Honey to get by the MOT. New plugs will help, gapped correctly with gauges, or at least clean the old ones to bright metal (wire brush, sand paper may leave grit). You could try Duralube with your oil change, it coats the engine with a slippery layer and may tighten the tolerances a bit. It does increase mileage.
it could be bad valve seals.oil is leaking pass the guides and getting on the valves and smoking.
You have used a wrong oil.

    Pl consult your car mechanic.
go to your mechenic and get a valve job done on your car and the rest of your engine checked out for other problems.
sounds like you have serious trouble. do a compression test to see it falls into the acceptable range. if this reveals nothing, do a leak-down test. since you probably don't possess either tool to perform such a test i would recommend letting a shop have a look at it. it should be an easy diagnosis for a qualified tech.
Engine overhaul or a new engine. There are chemicals but they are more of a waste of money than anything.
Someone may have ';rolled-back'; the odometer. U definately need a replacement of the rings on the cylinders. In bad financial shape? Try some Motor Medic or another brand to stop it for a while. That will help U for a while. Good luck. Charles
There is no easy solution to this engine burning oil. The thing to do is get it rebuilt or replaced. There is NO other solution which will pass an emissions test (which is what i suppose MOT is).

That said, oil has to be getting into the combustion chamber to get burned and come out as smoke in the exhaust. There are 3 possible sources, rings, valves and head gasket. Rings wear, and if you let it go low on oil or went long periods without an oil change, rings can wear enough to let oil from the crankcase get by as the piston is on the intake stroke. A compression test will tell you if it is rings as the compression will be low on one or more cylinders. Valves are a bit difficult since a compression test checks how well the valves seal to the head, but not if oil is running down the valve stem from a bad seal above the seating surface. You will have oil fouling on a single plug if it is a valve guide and compression will be in line with normal wear. Last, the head gasket, but you will have other problems if this is the case, like overheating because of exhaust getting into the coolant, Again, if the break in the head gasket is located where oil is channeled to the head, it may suck in oil on the intake stroke, but then you might notice the crankcase being pressurized by oil leaking out of other parts of the engine, most likely the front and rear seals of the crankshaft. When exhaust gets into the crankcase, two things tend to happen, overheating and oil coming out of places it shouldn't. All cars since the 70's have had positive crankcase ventilation (PCV), air is sucked out of the crankcase into the intake manifold to burn oil vapor and the leakage around the rings which normally happens. If this PCV system is overloaded or simply not working, the crankcase works under pressure instead of a vacuum, and that is what makes oil leak out of strange places. The PCV system may be the method why oil is getting intot he intake air, but that is because of another problem. The PCV system is doing the job, but there is too much to handle without obvious smoke. Come to think of it, if you over fill the crankcase with oil, the PCV system will act to channel the excess into the intake air, which MIGHT actually be your problem. Are you SURE you are in fact properly filling the crankcase? A friend a while back had a problem when someone stole the dipstick from his truck. (Why would someone steal a dipstick???) He thought he got an exact replacement, but he didn't, and it caused him to overfiill, which caused the oil to foam and leak out the valve covers. It took a long time to figure out the dipstick was the root problem.
have it checked thoroughly by a mechanic that you trust. If something is smoking it usually means the well is dry or the oil has spilled onto something under the hood that heats up. Ok, so maybe there's a leak somewhere, something isn't airtight, or maybe some heater guage has gone bad.
sounds like the piston rings have gone, cheaper to sell it on and get something else, it'll fail its MOT as well as the emissions will be too high
    get a new car!!!
You can use a heavier oil like 50 or 60.
WELL THE ANS IS JUST SO SIMPLE..DIDNT U GET TO IT EARLIER,...?..';STOP DRIVIN UR CAR !';..PRETTY MUCH HUH..!
Its quite common for the valve guide rubbers to be u/s not cheap but get a price from a garage
Can't say i agree with the person who said Fords are notorious for eating piston rings... Ford usually have a name for building bullet-proof engines that will run on any amount of mis-treatment. Take a look at any Ka full of BeanyBabies driven by a girl...

I stripped a 144,000mile '94 2.0 Zetec for use in my kit car. Bought new rings, full set of gaskets, the works. Measured the new rings against the old ones, and couldn't tell the difference! Crusty old valve stem seals is the more likely problem, assuming the car has had regular oil and filter changes. These are cheap enough to replace and apparently can be done with the head on the car - you need to use compressed air in the cylinder to hold the valves shut when you take the springs off. The stem seals that came off mine were b*ggered! Oh, and the dude who I bought the car off said he'd run it for two years and done nothing to it. When I stripped out the dangly bits I discovered it had no air filter!!! For 2 years!?!? Head wasn't damaged tho and the valves live to fight a few more miles yet. Sounds pretty bullet proof to me!

Good luck fella, hope you get your MOT
    Stop driving it.
My truck once did this, before I sold it. I just lived with it, sadly,
Well if it is burning that much oil, It is time to replace the motor.

65000 is not a lot of miles for a car, it seems funny that ir should be worn out that fast.

Is it possable that someone poured dirt into the engine? Piston rings last a lot longer then that. Unless you really have a bad air filter.

Run a compression test and see what the compression is.

It is also passable that the engine is not breathing right, and has a bad PCV valve.
    overhaull the engine
It's either valve seals or piston rings. If you've taken care of the car then it's probably not the rings, so it's probably the valves, they may need new springs. In fact, re-reading your post, I'd say it's definitely the valves. (Why are you going over 4000 rpms!?!) A valve job can be pricey, but it's going to be cheaper than buying a whole new car.

Your mechanic should check the compression of the cylinders, that should determine pretty quickly if your rings are gone. If they are, then you could be looking at a lot of money because your cylinders may need to be rebored and you'll have to buy oversized pistons.

If your valves are not sealing completely, it may not be that bad. That's where I would focus.
by selling it to a business that crushes cars, your smoking problem will come to a glorious end...
