Is there any difference between Car engine oil and motorcycle engine oil?

I'm going to change my Harley-Davidson bike engine oil for the first time. Is it OK to use car oil instead of HD oil which is going to cost me like 15 dollars while car oil (mobil or Castrol) costs about 4 dollars. Is there any difference between Car engine oil and motorcycle engine oil?
This is a contriversial subject. Harley Davidson of course would tell you to use their oil exclusively, but I've read tech-talk articles in which specialists state that the major brands of automotive oil, as long as you adhere to the recommended weight, which is usually 20w50, is just as good if not better. Many owners are using various brands of synthetic oil with good results.

It would probably be good to do some research before changing. The oil in your HD, being air cooled, would have a lot more temperature variation than a car engine - this is probably why 20w50 is recommended. Is there any difference between Car engine oil and motorcycle engine oil?
There is a huge difference in weights and additives that are used. Do not use regular car oil... it will not work
yea the motorcycle oil has special additives... i wud suggest payin for the ';special'; oil at least till ur out of ur warranty...cas most bike shops will void ur warranty for stupid reasons lik this if u hav an issue...
