Can overfilling your car with oil cause damage?

I took my truck in fro an oil change. About a month later, the check engine light on, when i opened the hood the first thing i checked was the oil andd the oil stick said it was overfilled. Can overfilling the oil cause damage? Is the place that changed my oil responsible for this????Can overfilling your car with oil cause damage?
Overfilling the engine with oil will cause the bottom of the crank to splash through oil as the crank rotates, this will aerate the oil, the oil pump will not be able to pump this mess, and yes your engine can be ruined. Can overfilling your car with oil cause damage?
yes - too much oil pressure can blow seals. Take it back to where you had it changed and have them re-check it. This usually doesn't make the check engine light come on though - that's usually an emissions problem or your gas cap is loose.
A little bit over-filled won't hurt anything. Over-filled a LOT can cause the seals to blow out, causing large oil leaks.

These days, when the ';check engine'; light comes on, there is almost nothing under the hood you can look at. Take it to an auto parts store and have then use a code reader to scan the computer for error codes.
1/2 a quart to 1 quart over full wont hurt your engine, much more than that you start running a risk of excessive pressure in the crankcase blowing out seals, and pushing oil past the rings, i have seen cars that were filled up with oil after the mechanic forgot to drain the old oil cause the check engine light to come on due to missfire codes, caused by the excessive oil getting into the cylinders and making the car skip, have the excess oil drained out and if the codes are in the p0300-p0308 range, if so have the codes cleared and drive it and see if its ok. good luck!
